- Locate a photographer via www.nowilaymedowntosleep.org - They provide free services to families.
- In addition to the NILMDTS photographer, have a family member or friend take many pictures of the baby including the little baby features such as feet, hands, ears. Have them take pictures of the family with the baby, friends with the baby and any other visitors. Take pictures of the baby with something special like a blanket, ring, necklace, stuffed animal, really any object the family will take home with them.
- Do clay prints of the hands and feet
- Do ink prints of the hands and feet
- Clip a little bit of hair
- Bathe the baby (if the skin is not too fragile. With some babies the skin has already started to peel when born and bathing may not be ideal.)
- Ask the nurse to provide information on local funeral homes and if they are aware of any that provide free or discounted services. Also ask if there is anything the hospital does (ex: free cremation).
- Most importantly, spend as much time with the baby. You should never feel rushed to say goodbye. Spend hours with your baby. As hard as it is, in your heart you will know when it is time to say goodbye.
This is a page dedicated to my son, Avery Jace Kimbrell who was stillborn September 5, 2006 at 34 weeks 2 days and to all his angel friends who were taken from this world far too early. I hope that the information here will help others going through a loss as well as help those who know someone who has experienced a loss. Please look at the Blog Archive for the posted poems. Check back as I continue to add more info and make this blog better. Feedback is always welcome.
